onductivity electrode is a fundamental sensor designed to measure the ability of an aqueous solution to conduct electrical current, which directly correlates with its total concentration of dissolved ions. This key parameter is essential for assessing water purity, controlling chemical processes, and monitoring environmental compliance across industries like pharmaceuticals, power generation, food and beverage, and wastewater treatment.
The core of the electrode is a measurement cell containing at least two conductive elements. When an alternating current is applied, the ions in the solution complete the circuit between these elements. The resulting conductance is measured and, along with the cell's geometric constant (cell constant, K), is used to calculate conductivity. Modern electrodes are almost always integrated with a temperature sensor (typically a Pt100 or Pt1000 RTD) for automatic compensation, as conductivity is highly temperature-dependent. Common designs include two-pole cells for general use and four-pole (or four-electrode) cells, which use separate current and voltage rings to minimize polarization effects and extend measurement range, especially in high-conductivity applications. -
