Online Oil-in-Water Analyzer is a specialized instrument designed for the continuous, real-time monitoring of oil and hydrocarbon concentrations in water. It plays a critical role in environmental protection, industrial wastewater treatment, produced water monitoring in oil and gas operations, marine vessel ballast water management, and cooling water systems in power plants and refineries. By providing immediate detection of oil contamination, it enables rapid response to prevent environmental violations, protect aquatic ecosystems, and ensure regulatory compliance with stringent discharge limits (such as the 15 ppm standard for produced water).
The analyzer employs advanced optical detection technologies, most commonly ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF) or infrared absorption (IR) methods. UVF technology is particularly effective as it excites oil molecules with specific wavelengths of light, causing them to emit fluorescence proportional to the oil concentration. This method offers high sensitivity, fast response, and minimal interference from water itself. Some systems utilize laser-induced fluorescence or scattered light measurements for enhanced accuracy in challenging matrices like high turbidity or varying oil types.
Fully automated, the instrument integrates sampling, sample conditioning (including homogenization and degassing), measurement, and cleaning cycles. It features automatic calibration, self-diagnostic functions, and robust sensor designs with anti-fouling mechanisms like wipers or air blasts to maintain reliability in harsh environments. Data is transmitted via standard protocols (4-20mA, Modbus, Ethernet) for integration with plant control systems, enabling real-time alarms and automated process adjustments.
